Club Med, sunny holiday isle. But so much more - Eleonora's Falcons and Balearic Warblers heading an impressive cast of birds, all seen in the stunning settings of the Serre de Tramuntana mountains and coastal cliffs of the Formentor Peninsula. Also Moltoni's Warbler, Black Vulture and a feast of owls. Add in the rural delights of the interior and the rich wetlands of S'Albufera, home to the likes of Marbled Teal and Purple Swamphens, and the result was a most fine short break. |

 Red-breasted Flycatcher, Golden Orioles and Lesser Spotted Eagles, Camberwell Beauties, Swallowtails and Short-tailed Blues, the delights of early May in Lithuania. Next came a short break to sunny Mallorca, Balearic Warblers and Eleonora's Falcons heading the starcast list. And then it was back to Lithuania, Red-backed Shrikes and Icterine Warblers arriving at Labanoras, a flush of butterflies including Green Hairstreaks and Dingy Skippers, plus yet more Swallowtails and Camberwell Beauties. |

 Sweden is a very nice country, full of civilised people and very nice landscapes. It also has some very good birding possibilities, one of the many highlights being the spring gatherings of Common Cranes at Lake Hornborga. As the numbers climbed over recent years, so too had my interest in witnessing the spectacle, the 2010 bonanza of 18,000 birds just mouth-watering to the extreme. So, when fancying a little weekend away in spring 2012, my thoughts turned to putting this into action, the idea becoming all the more tempting by an unprecedented influx of Great Grey Owls into southern Sweden over the preceding month and the minor issue that I managed to find an air ticket from my base in Lithuania for less than the price of a medium-sized pizza!
